Although early detection is the key to combating breast cancer, women in Monroe County will be able to utilize the latest technology at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center (GMRMC).
“Digital mammography is the state-of-the-art in breast cancer detection technology,” GMRMC Lead Mammography Technician Kristinna Wade said. “Digital mammography uses an electronic image instead of a film screen. The image goes directly into the computer and it uses less radiation. The images can then be manipulated for better views.”
GMRMC CEO Dwayne Blaylock said the new technology will be very beneficial to the residents of Monroe County.
"We are excited here at Gilmore to be the only one in our community to offer the new digital mammography services,” Blaylock said. “We want the absolute best technology available for our patients. Compared to our old analog system, the new digital mammography system produces clearer, higher resolution images in seconds. The addition of the new Women's Center with these upgraded services allows us to provide state-of-the-art high quality healthcare close to home."
If a lump in the breast is detected, Wade said GMRMC is now providing a new service to test for malignancy.
“We did our first stereoactcic breast biopsies last Friday,” she said. “This allows us to take a needle into the lump as opposed to having open breast surgery.”
