Katie Scott

ABERDEEN – Katie Ruth Murff Scott, 89, died Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Care Center of Aberdeen. She was born March 12, 1920, to Ernest Murff and Kate Farrar Murff in Monroe County. She was a lifelong resident of Monroe County, where she was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Methodist Church.

There was no service. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen assisted the family.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Lloyd Scott of Aberdeen; one daughter, Betty Scott Olley (Bruce) of Aberdeen; two grandchildren, Krista Olley Blankensopp and Kevin Scott Olley; one great-grandchild, Jessica Katarina Blankensopp. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Tula Webb and Nell Smithson; and one brother, Connell Murff.

Clyde Perkins

TALLULA – Clyde Perkins died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Lafayette General Hospital in Lafayette, La., as the result of a motor vehicle accident. He was 87. He was an Anguilla native and had lived in Tallula for the past 52 years. He was a farmer and a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son Clyde Jessie "C.J." Perkins; a daughter Sharon Perkins Juslin; and a brother Wallace Perkins.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Hazel Parham Perkins; one son, Tim Perkins of Issaquena County; two daughters Linda Paulette Perkins Young of St. Martinsville, La., and Susan Perkins Walters of Newburg, Ind; a brother Newton Perkins of Weathersford, Texas; a sister Susie Terry of Gonzales, La.; 11grandchildren and 15 great-children.

Services were at 10:00 a.m. June 13 at Rolling Fork Church of Christ with the Revs. Norman Maranto and Coy Walters officiating. Burial followed at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Pallbearers were Eddie Hatcher, Ronnie Kerr, Bill "Jr." Clinkscales, James Miller, Deanie Miller and Gerald "Pee Wee" Ingram.

Honorary pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Wildlife Turkey Federation.

Billy Hester

CAROLINA – Billy Clinton Hester, 70, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after several months illness. He was born March 1, 1939, in Monroe County to James Ruble and Gladys Sanders Hester. He married Peggy Linda Hallmark in 1959. He worked in concrete construction for APAC. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, mechanic work and spending time with his grandchildren.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 9 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Billy Funderburk and Bro. Terry Garret officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda Hester of Carolina; three sons, Doug Hester (Melissa) of New Salem, David Hester (Wanda) of Carolina and Dale Hester (Gloria) of Peaceful Valley; one brother, Nolan Hester (Ann) of Cason; three sisters, Ruth Enlow of Aberdeen, Sara Nash (Robert) of Hatley and Ann Harlow (Billy Wayne) of Bigbee; eight grandchildren, Lindsey, Allison, Matthew, Ethan and Hanna Hester, Josh and B.J. Harmon, and Lucus Wells. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Betty Jo Stanford.

Pallbearers were Scott Hallmark, Terry Hallmark, Dewayne Hallmark, Nick Barron, Grant Harlow and Mike Hester.

Jerry Cossey

EVERGREEN – Jerry Ladell Cossey, 57, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at his home after a long illness. He was born May 15, 1952, in Lambert to Edward Cossey and Mozell Smith Bray.

Services were at 10 a.m. June 9 at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton with the Rev. Rickey Pierce and the Rev. Jesse Betts officiating. Burial was in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Melvin Hood

AMORY – Melvin Dean Hood, 89, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at his home. He was born July 15, 1919, in Monroe County to John Roy and Addie Zepher Page Hood. He attended Bigbee and Amory schools. He married Mable Elliot Conwill in 1942. A lifelong resident of the Amory and Bigbee areas, he owned Hood’s Cleaners in Amory with his brother, Robert, for 35 years before retiring.

He was a charter member of the St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church and served on the Official Board of Stewards, various committees, and helped any way his church needed him until his health failed. He will be remembered as a gentleman; a great father; and a man with a strong love for God, his wife and family. He was a man anyone would be proud to call a friend. He enjoyed fishing and farming in the Carolina community, gardening, quail and dove hunting, his grandchildren, and his dog, Sarge.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 12 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with the Rev. Glyn Wiygul officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mable Hood; one son, Kennon Hood (Beverly) of Amory; two brothers, James Orlan Hood of Olive Branch and Robert Page Hood (Wynelle) of Amory; one sister, Addie Etoyle Hood Earley (Myles) of Madison, Ala.; five grandchildren, Dr. Bryan Brister (Kristen), Ashley Hood Schermerhorn (Jimmy), Joey Hood, Erynne Hood Messina (George) and Melissa Hood; and one great-grandchild, Alex Brister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, Genevea Mae Wood, Roy Lamar Hood, Nell Louise Hood, Grace Jeanette Barnes, John Theron Hood and Marvin Elbert Hood.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Schermerhorn, Eric Larson, Ed Hood, Sgt. George Messina, USMC, Bob McDonald and Naveed Alim. Honorary pallbearers were all nieces and nephews.

George Frank Pate

WREN – George Dee Franklin Pate, 75, died Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory. He was born Feb. 18, 1934, in Itawamba County to John Booker and Susie Mae Steele Pate. He married Charlotte Brenda Kennedy in 1957. Before his retirement, he worked as an electrician for Walker Mfg. for 23 years. He was a Baptist. He enjoyed playing cards with his family, working word search puzzles, gardening, yard work and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially riding them on his golf cart.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 10 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Nettleton with Bro. Thomas Neal officiating. Burial was in the Wren Cemetery. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Charlotte Brenda Kennedy Pate of Wren; three daughters, Donna Haas (Calvin) of Shannon, and Kimberly Steele (John) and Judith Hall of Wren; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Ital of Marissa, Ill., Charlie Ray Hurley of Amory, Elois Giernoth (Wally) of Ingleside, Ill., and Enola Ann Powell (Larry) of Huffman, Texas; eight grandchildren, Charlotte Dianne Jones (Jason Lawrence), Jessica Renea Steele Lamb (Tim), Toria Pate Haas Neal (Brandon), Kelsey Breanne Steele, Nicholas Blake Haas, Pate Hall, Chloe Marie Hall and Maegan DeeAnn Hall of Wren; three great-grandchildren, Haylee MaKenzie Neal, Carley Elizabeth Lawrence and Aiden Wayne Neal; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ackles Leo and Melvin Lecil Pate; and three sisters, Etah McMickin, Euple Nell Watkins and Eugenia Ruth Smith.

Pallbearers were Pate Hall, Nicholas Haas, Tim Lamb, Brandon Neal, Randy McMickin and Keith Ital. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Hurley, Terry McMickin, Larry Ital, Sean McMickin, Kevin Powell and Aiden Neal.

Memorials may be may be made to the Wren Cemetery Fund or the Bethel Baptist Church in Nettleton.

Debra J. Walker

ABERDEEN – Debra J. Walker, 53, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 12 at the Fluker-Reed Activity Center. Burial was at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Westbrooks Funeral Home of Aberdeen was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Whitfield

SMITHVILLE – Charles Green “But Nutty” Whitfield, 72, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Gilmore Memorial Regional Hospital in Amory. He was born Jan. 16, 1937, to Arthur Green Whitfield and Laura Lue Whitfield. He was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Amory. He was a graduate of the West Amory High School, where he was a standout center and linebacker in football. He completed his college degree at the Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, where he graduated magna cum laude. He worked on the railroad for a short time before he became a teacher and a coach.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 13 at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Benjamin Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Amory. Darden and Sons Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Daphine Whitfield of Smithville; two sons, Darnell Lavell Whitfield and Mark Windon; one daughte, Sharnell Lattrell Whitfield, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, Howard (Emma) Standifer and Harold (Maxine) Standifer of Smithville; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn (John) Edwards of Tupelo and Merlin McLeod of Detroit, Mich.; an aunt, Virginia Christine Johnson of Amory; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eva Mae Hopkins; and one brother, Hennie Kenny Whitfield.

Rebecca Coggin

AMORY – Rebecca Coggin, 89, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at the Oak Tree Plantation in Amory. She was born May 4, 1920, in Plantersville to Ralph Cunningham and Jessie Brown Cunningham Mullins. She married William Carl Coggin Jr. in 1941; he died in 1998. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Amory, where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, the choir and United Methodist Women’s Association. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Garden Club, the DAR, Canasta Club and Dance Club. She was known for her apple pies at church potluck dinners. Her smile and sense of humor will be missed.

Services were at 1 p.m. June 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Amory with the Rev. Warren Coile and the Rev. David Laman officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Bennie Watson (Murphy) of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Janice Kulp (Francis) of Oreland, Pa.; daughter-in-law, Joby Coggin of Columbus; six grandchildren, Amy Weathers, Jim Watson, Susan Watson, Stacy Hopper, Rev. David Kulp and Jessica Bragg; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, William Paul Coggin; two sisters, Mary Frances Foster and twin Rachel Dukeminier; one brother, Bennie Cunningham; and a great-granddaughter, Sydney Elaine Watson.

Pallbearers were Frank Carlisle, Dr. Robert Cole, Phil Roberts, Fred Heckart, Brad Wilson and Jimmy Bost. Honorary pallbearers were Herman Hester and Robert Malloy.

James Powell

AMORY – James Andrew Powell, 86, died June 12, 2009, at the Riverplace Nursing Center in Amory. He was born June 17, 1922, in Becker to the late Robert Allen Powell and Mamie Hunell Powell Gosa. He lived in Becker before moving to Amory. He married Louise Miles in 1956, who survives. He worked for Wilson’s Mfg., the City of Amory sanitation department and he was a farmer. He was a member of the Trace Road Baptist Church and he enjoyed gardening. He especially enjoyed taking care of his stepgrandson, Frankie Miller.

Services were at 2 p.m. June 14 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Tommy Whaley and Bro. Bill Payne officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Louise Miles Powell of Amory; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Allen Powell Jr.; two half brothers, Joel and Noel Gosa; one sister, Mary Powell; one stepdaughter, Paulette Gosa Miller; and three step grandchildren, Frankie, Jerome and Mary Elizabeth Miller.

Pallbearers were Mike Edgeworth, Will Fowlkes, Neil Palmer, Jake Clement, Drew Edgeworth, Vincent Miles and Chuck Clement.

Honorary pallbearers were the People’s Drug Store Coffee Group.
