Don Holland

SMITHVILLE – Donald Wayne "Don" Holland, 55, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center surrounded by his family. Don was born on July 8, 1953, in Tupelo, the second of six sons born to J.C. and Sadie Monts Holland. He lived his first six years in the Palmetto Community of Lee County and the remainder of his youth growing up on the family farm, The Sadie J south of Plantersville. Don was active in all activities at Plantersville School including basketball, 4-H Club, Boy Scouts and Explorers and farming activities including showing prize winning registered black angus cattle. He was a 1972 graduate of Shannon High School and afterward farmed with his family in Lee and Monroe Counties. He was a longtime self employed heavy equipment operator and was well known as a master bulldozer operator, mechanic and dirt man having worked for several area contractors. He had lived in the Smithville-Hatley area the last six years where he was employed by C and C Construction Company. A lifelong Baptist, Don was a member of First Baptist-Plantersville, Union Baptist west of Shannon and at his death was a member of Trace Road Baptist Church in Amory. Don enjoyed the great outdoors, loved the land and its produce, piddling with equipment and old trucks, tractors and cars and spending time with his family especially his wife and children. He will be sorely missed by his family and wide circle of friends.

Lewis Thompson

SMITHVILLE – Lewis H. Thompson, 87, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Riverplace Nursing Center in Amory after an extended illness. He was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Smithville to Condie Lee and Vangie Bennett Thompson. He married Mary Helen Ross in 1946; she died in 1998. He was a retired employee of Monroe Trouser and a member of the Smithville Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He enjoyed gardening.

Services were Sunday, May 17, at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Smithville with Ministers Hoyet Hathcock and Mickey Beam officiating. Burial was in the Maxey Cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters, Dannis Mason (Ken), Vickie Weatherbee (Wayne), Allene Morgan and Kathy Baucom, all of Smithville; one sister, Jeanette Roche of Smithville; 11 grandchildren, Brad, Clay and Chad Thompson, Cayce Carter, Jody Powell, Kim Mills, Deedra Wray, Derek Thompson, Layce and Wesley Hacker, and Shaun Kinsey; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sons, Howell, Benny and Darwin Thompson; and two daughters, Susan Elam and Kelly Thompson.

Pallbearers were Brad, Clay and Chad Thompson, Cayce Carter, Jody Powell, Derek Thompson, Shaun Kinsey and Wesley Hacker.

Rosie Murray

GREENWOOD SPRINGS – Rosie Lee Murray, 91, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the River Place Nursing Home in Amory.

Services were at 2 p.m May 20 from Norwood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Carrter Cemetery in Detroit, Ala. Norwood Funeral Home of Sulligent, Ala., were in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Cook

ABERDEEN – Barbara Ann Cook, 54, died Friday, May 15, 2009, at her home.

Services were at 11 a.m. May 23 at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church. Burial was in Baptist Grove Cemetery in Prairie. Westbrooks Funeral Home of Aberdeen were in charge of the arrangements.

Nellie Hargett

NETTLETON – Nellie Pruitt Hargett, 73, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at her home after a long illness. She was born Sept. 23, 1935, in Itawamba County to William Leo and Erma Worthey Pruitt. She had lived in Nettleton for the past 47 years. She was a retired employee of Aircap in Verona and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Verona. She enjoyed working in her garden and walking.

Services were at 2 p.m. May 23 at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Nettleton with the Rev. John McAlister officiating. Burial was in Jones Chapel Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Leroy Hargett of Nettleton; one daughter, Donna Humble of Nettleton; two sons, Junior Smith and Frankie Smith (Debbie) of Golden; one sister, Elaine Ashley of Golden; five brothers, Gene Pruitt, Jimmy Pruitt, Jerry Pruitt (Tom), Ruble Pruitt and Johnny Pruitt (Debbie), all of Golden; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruby Pounders and Kathy Ann Pruitt; and one brother, William Oneal Pruitt.

Pallbearers were Allen Guthrie, Eddie Little, Jimmy Ray Gist, Derek Strawn, James Ottis Smith and James Albert Worthey.

Ilean Griffin

ABERDEEN – Ilean Griffin, 47, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

Services were at 1 p.m. May 29 at the Matubba Church of Christ in Aberdeen. Burial was in the Oddfellows Rest Cemetery. Belle Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Webb

PRAIRIE - Barbara Ann Drake Webb, 56, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Baptist Grove M. B. Church in Prairie with burial in the church cemetery. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Anthony Rollins

AMORY – James Anthony Rollins, 39, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. He was born Dec. 25, 1969, in Amory to James Thomas and Barbara Jean Turner Rollins. He was a 1988 graduate of Amory High School and had been employed by Amory Garment and Himolene in Verona before becoming disabled. He was a member of the Cason Baptist Church. He enjoyed music, singing, riding four-wheelers and his dog, Bubba.

Services were at 2 p.m. May 29 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Shane Crawford and Bro. Sammy McMillen officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.

Survivors include his parents, James and Barbara Rollins of Amory; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Roy Turner and Thomas Rollins; and his grandmothers, Lera Turner and Myrtle Weaver.

Pallbearers were Brent Swan, Andy Hood, David Robinson, Mike Reeves, Bart Brown, Chris Randolph, Steve Horn, Bucky Hester, Jason Culver, Tim Underwood, Jason Whitaker and Ronnie Colburn.

John Huffman

WREN – John Wayne Huffman, 69, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Nov. 25, 1939, in Chickasaw County to James Andrew and Madia Elizabeth Pilgreen Huffman. He had worked in the garment industry at Indian Creek Apparel and for Refreshments Inc. He married Carolyn Clark in 1959. He was a member of the Wren Church of Christ. He enjoyed gardening, collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, antiques, sports, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Services were at 2 p.m. May 30 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Tommy Lawson and Bro. Jamie Stark officiating. Burial was in the Coontail Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Huffman of Wren; two sons, Mike Huffman (Nina) of Hatley and Richard Huffman (Kathy) of Becker; one brother, James David “Jim” Huffman of Wren; and four grandchildren, Amber Huffman, Jordan Huffman, Laura Beth Huffman and Kyle Huffman. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Kyle Huffman, Jordan Huffman, Bobby Clark, Marty Huffman, Tommy Gann and Sydney Oakley. Honorary pallbearers were Guy Autry, Jim Waits, Tony Browning and Joey Clark.

James Leverett

SMITHVILLE – James F. Leverett, 72, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Birmingham, Ala., to Dewitt Talmadge and Myrtle Lou Kennedy Leverett. He lived in Huntsville, Ala., Orlando, Fla., Germany and Smithville. He was a retired aerospace engineer for Lockheed Martin as an aerospace engineer. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a Scottish Rite Mason. He enjoyed music and playing the guitar.

Services were 11 a.m. June 1 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. James Gillentine officiating. A graveside service with Masonic rites was at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Lann Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph L. Leverett of Orlando, Fla., and James F. Leverett Jr. of Smithville; the mother of his children, Glenda L. Leverett of Oneonta, Ala.; one sister, Marilyn Phillips of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and one grandson, Joseph L. Leverett Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Polly Watson, Evelyn Murray and Catherine Leverett.

Tommy Pugh

HAMILTON – Thomas Ray Pugh, 60, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen. He was born Dec. 8, 1948, to Thomas David Pugh and Mary Helen Pugh in Fayette, Ala. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County. He graduated from Hamilton School and High Forest Academy in Nashville, Tenn. He was an elder and clerk of session at Hamilton Presbyterian church. He worked as a medical technologist/EMT at Eupora and Aberdeen, and he was working for Dr. Brown in Aberdeen.

Services were Sunday, May 31, at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with the Rev. Freddie Rasberry and the Rev. Charles Caldwell officiating. Burial was in Center Hill Cemetery in Hamilton.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Pugh of Hamilton; one daughter, Nichole Pugh of Hamilton; one son, Ian Pugh (Bryndi) of Hamilton; one sister, Tammy Bowen (Larry) of Hamilton; two nieces, a special niece, Analeigh Bowen, and Kimberly Rowell; two nephews, Dustin Marshall and Justin Bowen. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Delane Marshall.

Pallbearers were Hank Vaiden, Jeffery House, Marty Richardson, Jeremy West, Wesley Lawrence and Issac Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Arthur Brown and staff; Willie Malone; Ben Smith; and elders of Hamilton Presbyterian Church.

Edward Moore

ABERDEEN – Nathaniel Edward Moore, 62, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He was a retired caretaker for the City of Aberdeen with 33 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Services were at 1 p.m. June 1 at First Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Willie A. Davis Sr. officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery. Belle Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two brothers, Willie Roger Moore of Olive Branch and Richard Earl (Beverly) Moore of Rochester, N.Y.

Clayton Jones Sr.

ABERDEEN – Clayton Evans Jones Sr., 82, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at his home in Aberdeen. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was born July 1, 1926, to Harold Evans Jones and Mattie Sue Hollingsworth Jones. He was a self-employed truck driver. He worked for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department in the early sixties and retired in 2003 from Monroe County road maintenance. He was a graduate of Greenwood Springs School and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of New Hope Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion for 62 years. After retiring, his favorite pastime was selling produce from his home.

Services were at 11 a.m. June 1 at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Bro. Tom Sheffield and Bro. Robert Moore officiating. Burial with military rites was in Sartor Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Clayton Evans Jones Jr. (Tammy) of Hamilton; two sisters, Helen Atkins of Amory and Eugenia Talbot (Gerald) of Greenwood Springs; two granddaughters, Dyana Jones Junkin (Jason) and Amanda Jones of Hamilton; a special friend, Hazel Reed of the Bartahatchie community. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Jane Atkins; and an infant son.

Pallbearers were William Dean Atkins, Sammy Atkins, Jerry Talbot, James Tabor Reed, Donald Dahlem, Bobby Westbrook, Aaron Welch and Jerry Smith. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Julia Bowen

SMITHVILLE – Julia Ray Dabbs Bowen, 90, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Aug. 11, 1918, in Hatley to Lemuel and Mary Fuqua Dabbs. She married Ruble Bowen in 1934; he died in 1985. She lived in Detroit, Mich., for 17 years before moving back to the Hatley/Smithville area. She was a homemaker and a member of the Smithville Baptist Church. She worked for many years in the cafeteria at the Smithville School. She enjoyed gardening, traveling with her family, spending time with her grandchildren, and her dog, Sissy.

Services were at 3:30 p.m. May 31 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Smithville with Bro. Lloyd Minor officiating. Burial was in the Young Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include two sons, Hoyt Bowen (Mary) of Scottsboro, Ala., and Norman Bowen (Annette) of Tupelo; her twin sister, Celia Fay Jackson of Smithville; six grandchildren, Michael Bowen (Becky), Mark Bowen (Debra), Angela Dennis (Dan), Russ Bowen (Carla), Wes Bowen (Susan) and Don Moore; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Peggy Moore; one grandson, Scott Moore; one great-grandson, Mik Bowen; five sisters, Minnie Lee Jones, Winona Hill, Emma Palmer, Annabell Evans and Loucille Welch; and four brothers, Austin Dabbs, Houston Dabbs, Burley Dabbs and Moses Dabbs.

Pallbearers were Van Dabbs, F.B. Boozer, Lamar Minor, Jerry Lee Frederick, Joe Hal Morgan and Loyd Pearson. Honorary pallbearer were Kenneth Hill.
