Kathryn Elizabeth Brown

BAINBRIDGE, Georgia – Kathryn Elizabeth Brown, 22 months, died Oct. 6, 2009, at Bainbridge Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 10, 2007, in Cumberland County, North Carolina, to Duwaine and Elizabeth “Beth” Powell Brown of Bainbridge. She attended Morningside Baptist Church and Little Blessings Day Care.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Morningside Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Dean officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. Cox-Ware Funeral Home of Bainbridge were in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her parents, Duwaine and Elizabeth “Beth” Powell Brown of Bainbridge; one sister, Taylor Brown of the home; grandparents, Kelly and Kevin Harvey of Bainbridge; Chekeetta and Ricky Brown of Aberdeen; great-grandparents are Billy Harvey of Bainbridge, June Crosby of Moultrie and the late Roger Crosby, Tommy Thomas and Kaye Thomas, Patricia James of Aberdeen and Wesley James of Booneville.

Pallbearers were Cody Hutson, Jonathan Boyd, Jay Powell and Ricky Brown.

Felix Louis Miller

RIDGELAND – Felix Louis Miller, 76, went to be with the Lord after an accidental fall on Oct. 10, 2009, in Tupelo. The family would like to thank all of the medical staff at North Mississippi Medical Center for their professionalism and support.

He was born on March 21, 1933, in Quincy to Alice and Thomas Miller. He went to high school at Becker and attended Hinds Junior College in Raymond. He served as a Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class in the United States Navy. He was a licensed electrician and retired from the Jackson Public Schools. He was an active member of Broadmoor Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday morning greeter and a member of the Joy Council.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Barron Miller.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Broadmoor Baptist Church with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Survivors include his daughter, Angie Miller Strickland (James) of Madison; two sons, Terry Miller of Joplin, Missouri, and Thomas Miller of Crystal Springs; one stepson, Gerald Barron (Sylvia) of Oxford; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ruby Peach, Helen Pace, Mary Ratliff, Gertrude Sanders, Emma Langford; two brothers, Basil Miller and Wayne Miller.

The family would like to acknowledge the special bond of love between Barbara Simmons and Felix.

Memorials may be made to the building fund of Broadmoor Baptist Church.

Martha Sue Guyton

GREENWOOD SPRINGS – Martha Sue Guyton 49, of Greenwood Springs, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at her residence. She was born Oct. 30, 1959, in Lamar County, Ala., to Sterling and Annie Belk Hayes. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and crocheting quilts. She loved her family, especially her children and grandchildren and spent time caring for her parents.

Services were at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Otts Funeral Home Chapel with burial is Mt. Hebron Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents, Sterling and Annie Hayes of Sulligent, Ala.; her husband, John Guyton of Greenwood Springs; one daughter, Vanetta Rose Guyton (Stacey) Gray, of Greenwood Springs; four grandchildren, Kaitlyn Guyton, Sunny Gray, Stacey Suesanna Gray and John Dakota Ross Gray; four brothers, Bobbie (Judy) Hayes, Frankie (Ann) Hayes and Danny (Doris) Hayes, all of Sulligent, Ala., and Henry Dale Hayes of Greenwood Springs.

Pallbearers were Stacey Gray, Jessie Hayes, Donald Humbers, Dewey Guyton, Brandon Davis and Harold Guyton.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie Hayes, and a sister, Anita Kay Hayes.

Roy West

ATHENS - Roy E. West, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at his residence. He was born Jan. 25, 1940, in Monroe County to Roy Clifton and Gwendolyn Boyd West. He married Martha Carol Sykes in 1967. Before his retirement, he was a welder for Babcock amp& Wilcox in West Point. He was a member of the Paine Memorial Methodist Church. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed working Sudoku puzzles, which he recently taught his granddaughter how to play. He enjoyed riding his grandson on the Gator.

Services were at 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Steve Jackson and Bro. Mac Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Durrett Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Carol West of Athens; one daughter, Lisa Carol Colvin and special son-in-law, Adam, of Tupelo; one brother, Louis T. West of Athens; two sisters, Betty Jane Phillips (Bro. Mac) of Amory and Mary Lou West of Athens; two grandchildren, Reagan and Weston Colvin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Lynn Crump, Dwayne Brown, Tommy Head, Lee Thomas Crump, Marty Huffman and Boyd Duncan.

Tom Haney

WREN - John Thomas "Tom" Haney Jr., 82, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at his residence. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Wren to John Thomas Haney Sr. and Mattie Mae Williams Haney. He married Erma Nell Strawbridge in 1966; she died in 2005. He was an employee of Gilmore Puckett, a self-employed painter, and a retired employee of Amory Garment Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Tranquil United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Services were 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Arlis Lee and Bro. Harrison Upshaw officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.

Survivors include one sister, Ora Lillian Trenor of West Point; two sisters-in-law, Willa Dean Reeves of Sulligent, Ala., and Derenda Foreman of Amory; five brothers-in-law, James Strawbridge of Wren, Lealon Strawbridge (Eudene) of Amory, Ray Strawbridge (Robbie) of Amory, Edward Strawbridge (Lonie) of Sherman and James W. Davis of Amory; nephews, Chester Johnson (Reid), Jim Trenor (Bobbie), Tommy Trenor (Carol Ann), Jim Strawbridge, Ricky Reeves, Eddie Strawbridge, Keith Davis, Kirk Strawbridge, Shane Strawbridge, Steve Strawbridge and Julian Strawbridge; and nieces, Debbie Lewis, Kim Sweeney, Ruthie Strawbridge, Shelia Strawbridge, Stephanie Governor, Teresa Wilbanks, Frances Roberts, Tanya Powell, Angelita Jones, Crystal Alvarado and Lisa Tomlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers-in-law, James L. Trenor, Fred Strawbridge and Maxwell Reeves; one sister-in-law, Shirley Strawbridge Davis; and a niece, Sherry Strawbridge.

Pallbearers were Chester Johnson, Jim Trenor, Tommy Trenor, Charles Ellis Williams, Roy Haney, Gene Haney, James Richard Haney, Bailey Haney, Jim Strawbridge, Ricky Reeves, Steve Strawbridge, Eddie Strawbridge and Alan Haney.

Willie Ganey

FULTON - Willie Lettoa Ganey, 93, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at The Meadows in Fulton after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Mississippi to Henry and Mae Miles Keeton. She married William Ganey in 1933; he died in 1975. She lived in Walker County, Ala., for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Old Union Cemetery near Eldridge, Ala., with Minister Levi Sides officiating. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include four sons, Earl Ganey (Faye) of Graysville, Ala., Eual Ganey (Mariruth) of Graysville, Ala., Roy Harlin Ganey (Charlotte) of Graysville, Ala., and Russell Ganey (Darlene) of Carbon Hill, Ala.; two sisters, May Belle Williams and Joyce Lantrip, both of Amory; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and five brothers, Daley, Grady, Curtis, Coolidge and Bud.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Brewer

LACKEY – James Edward Brewer, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born April 22, 1936, to Floyd Brewer and Cora Lee Willis Orr. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and a member of the Pentecostal church. He was an Army veteran and retired from Walker Manufacturing after 33 years.

Services were at 11 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel with Bro. Danny Hollis officiating. Burial followed in Camp Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Faye Smith Brewer of Hamilton; a daughter, Debbie Richardson of Hamilton; a son, James Mitchell Brewer (Darlene) of Caledonia; a sister, Brenda Brewer of Aberdeen; two half-sisters and three stepsisters; a brother, Albert Brewer of Hatley; one half-brother and three stepbrothers; three grandchildren, Adam Law, Britt Richardson and Kelsey Brewer; and one great-grandchild, Madison Richardson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sarah Joy Sandlin; and two brothers, Willis Brewer and Eddie Brewer.

Pallbearers were Brandon Smith, John Michael Perkins, Scott McNeese, Staley Herron, Donald Herron and Vance Herron.

George Cayson

TUPELO – George Monroe Cayson died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at his home. He was born May 15, 1943, in Tupelo to Lee and Lillian Mary Cayson. He worked at Caldwell Appliance Store, Gardner-Watson Ice Company, Mississippi Box Company and W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors for many years. He was a member of Stevenson Chapel CME Church in Tupelo.

Services were at 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at Lane Chapel CME Church in Tupelo with the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Penson officiating, and the Rev. Charles Penson delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Porters Memorial Cemetery. N.L. Jones & Son Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include three sisters, Laura Taylor of Saltillo, Jeanette (Eddie) Merritt of St. Louis, Mo., and Rev. Gussie (Arthur) Marshall of Aberdeen; one brother, Paul (Annie Pearl) Cayson of Tupelo; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Lundy Pulliam Jr.

PRAIRIE – Lundy Pulliam Jr., 78, died Saturday at his home in Prairie. He was a deacon at Pleasant Plain M.B. Church and a member of Shady Grove M.B. Church. He was an employee of Clay County and remained a part-time employee after retiring. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and giving instructions.

Services were at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at Shady Grove M.B. Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Williams Memorial Funeral Home of Okolona was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary P. Taylor (Johnny) of Pheba; two sons, James E. Pulliam (Mary) of Houston and Tyrone Pulliam of Prairie; one sister, Gertrude P. McMillian of Prairie; one brother, C.D. Pulliam (Ruthie) of Prairie; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild.

Virgie Dell Jones

ABERDEEN – Virgie Dell Jones, 74, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.

Services were at 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at Daniel Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery. Westbrooks Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James Guyton

AMORY – James Escar Guyton, 78, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at the Oak Tree Plantation after an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Monroe County, he was born April 26, 1931, to the late James Carl and Eva S. Strawbridge Guyton. He attended Splunge School and lived in Becker most of his life. A U.S. Army veteran, he served as a medic. He farmed and worked for Gilmore Puckett and retired from Amory Garment Co. He was independent Baptist and enjoyed crocheting and people.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Mac Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Haughton Memorial Park.

Survivors include three brothers, Truman Guyton (Cordella) of Hodges, Ala., J.C. Guyton (Betty) of Becker, and Gredel Guyton of Smithville; one sister, Edith Gunner of Sulligent; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Charles Mitchell, Arvin Other, and Donald Claxton Guyton.

Pallbearers were Brandon Guyton, Jonathan Carter, Devin Guyton, Fred Heckart, Terry Edwards and Terry Adair.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Edna Sullivan

NETTLETON – Edna Earl Ganaway Sullivan, 81, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at the Homeplace Assisted Living Facility in Saltillo.

She was born March 18, 1928, in Dorsey to Curtis and Virgie Bradley Ganaway. She worked as a supervisor in the planning department for Boeing-Rockwell in Los Angeles before retirement. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, traveling and making ceramics.

Services were at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Doug Moore officiating. Burial was in the Keyes Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Libby Schukei, of Prattville, Ala.; two grandchildren, Brandon Schukei of Atlanta and Kim Baker (James) of Prattville; four grandchildren, Kelly, Blake, Katie and Scott Baker; one brother, John Ganaway of Dorsey; two sisters, Lola Bailey (Fred) of Las Vegas and Faye Gangloff of Fort Worth, Texas; special friends, Elowayne and Bill Jones of Mantachie; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott “Pat” Sullivan; her parents; one brother, Carlos Ganaway; and a son-in-law, David Schukei.

Pallbearers were Mark Jones, Carl Ganaway, Steve Ganaway, Chris Ganaway, David Webb and Stephen Ganaway.

Thomas Leach

NETTLETON – Charles Thomas Leach, 45, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at his residence on Metts Road in Nettleton after a 4 1/2-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Okolona on May 29, 1964, to James Homer Leach Jr. and Willo Jean Sheffield Leach. He grew up in the Old Union Community of Lee County and had lived in Nettleton all his adult life. He was a Baptist and attended Foster’s Cosmetology School in Sherman, working as a hair stylist for several years. He was a supervisor at Lucky Star in Nettleton and was manager of a convenience store before becoming disabled. He enjoyed fishing, was an artist and a home decorator, and was an avid conversationalist, bringing joy and laughter to all who knew and loved him.

Services were at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Jason Howell and Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial followed in the Old Union Cemetery west of Shannon.

Survivors include his mother, Jean Markham of Nettleton; a sister, Rita Faye Whitt of Nettleton; two brothers, James Rudy Leach of Nettleton and Bobby Wayne Whitt of Branson, Mo.; his nieces and nephews, Jimmy Dale, Daniel, Luta, Lacinda and Miriah; his special friends and caregivers, Ricky Haughton, Phyllis Buchanan, James Davis, Essie Hawk, Terry Capps, Loretta and Charles Upton, Nelda McCay and Frankie McCay; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Junior Leach; his brother, Forrest Jackson Whitt; and his grandparents.

Pallbearers were Bobby Richey, Jimmy Hall, Charles Sutphin, Jimmy Underwood, James Davis and Joshua Patterson. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Capps, Mondo Rivera and Sam Wages.

Charles Clegg

HAMILTON – Charles Ray Clegg, 68, died Saturday, Oct. 10, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

He was born Oct. 12, 1940, to Lester Lloyd Clegg and Laura Mildred Pounders Clegg. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Tegrant Corporation. He resided in Hamilton for the past three years.

Services were at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13 at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Rev. Wayne Clegg and Rev. Bobby Pounders officiating. Burial was in McDuffa Cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Marie Seda and husband, Joe, of Oak Grove Village, Ill.; three brothers, John Wayne Clegg and his wife, Glinda, of Bastrop, La., Arthur Eugene Clegg and his wife, Cathy, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tommy Dean Clegg and his wife, Peggy, of Hamilton; and four grandchildren, Daniel Seda, Elizabeth Seda, Rebecca Seda and Jonathan Seda.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers were Juston West, Jason West, Jeremy West, Mark Gilliland, Donald Davis and Wayne Logan.
