Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann made some interesting points regarding voter fraud in Mississippi and his office’s push for voter ID during his visit to North Monroe County recently.Hosemann is stumping hard to get 90,000 signatures on a petition to take the matter to the voters so they can decide if the state should require its voters to show identification at the polls. For those interested in the petition, it can be found here. The issue has been a hot topic for quite some time and Hosemann stated there was going to be another big push in the coming weeks for a voter ID program.Opponents of the program said showing an ID was along the lines of a poll tax or reminiscent of Jim Crow laws — it was something that would get in the way of people voting. How requiring someone to show identification before they are allowed to vote is racial profiling escapes me. It seems, in all logical and rational lines of thinking, to create an even playing field. The measure was presented through the state legislature earlier this year and was voted down in the senate, one vote short of the votes needed for a two-thirds majority, according to the Commercial Appeal.I blame this on the Mississippi House — the bill not only provided for voter identification requirements but a majority of the bill was consumed with allowing voters to vote 14 days early in elections. Many, myself included, view an earlier voting schedule as a proverbial recipe for disaster. Ah, there’s the Shakespearean rub — the House loaded the bill with ridiculous provisions to keep it from ever getting passed. As long as we continue on without voter identification, dead people, empty lots, people who have moved and people from the wrong wards will still be allowed to vote — sometimes twice in Aberdeen! What do you think about voter ID?

As a former Monroe countian, I think that providing an ID is pretty much an excepted practice everywhere else I have ever lived. Providing an ID does not add any more time to the voting process and if you can't prove who you are, should you really be allowed to vote. Come on Monroe county, let's welcome good practices.

I posted this under Brandon's username by accident.

I apologize to Rep. Puckett for the Commercial Appeal's error

From Rep. Jimmy Puckett:

The Commerical Appeal printed incorrect information if it claimed that I

voted against voter ID. I voted for HB 1533 which was killed by Senator

Merle Flowers' committee. I ran on voter ID and I will vote every time for voter ID.

I would appreciate it if you would please print a correction in the Monroe County

Journal. I do not look forward to having to explain that the paper was incorrect

until the correction is printed.

Just pull up HB 1533 and you will get the correct information.

I have never abstained on any vote in the House in two years.

Rep. Jimmy Puckett

now now

I kind of doubt that 200,000 dollar remark probably closer to 2 ooo but to each his own if you beleive that let me tell you about this bridge in brooklin I have for sale. And the sheriff needs a 4 wheel drive with a winch to catch all those dope growers. and he has caught lots of them. Could this be the reason you are against the sheriff having a 4 wheel drive with a winch? why dont you tell us where your property is located to save us the trouble of looking it up in the land records. Our sheriff is a good christian and an honorable man. So whats the beef brother?

yeah has anyone heard of sheriff hood buying a new 4 door Z71 WITH A WINCH AND BRUSH GUARD WITH COUNTY MONEY AND USING IT AS HIS SHERIFF TRUCK, SURE SEEMS AS IF HE IS BLOWING TAXPAYER'S MONEY. HOW MANY SHERIFF'S IN THE SURROUNDING COUNTY'S HAS THAT FOR THEIR VEHICLE. ASLO HEARD THAT IT COST $200,000 FOR THE CHIEF DEPUTY TO GO TO THE FBI SCHOOL AND WHEN HE GETS BACK THE SHERIFF WILL BE GOING, I THOUGHT THATS WHY WE HAVE ACTUAL FBI AGENTS NOT WANT TO BE'S BETTER PAY BETTER ATTENTION TO NEXT ELECTION I GUESS.

Thanks, Mike.

I respect your opinion on voter intimidation but I have approximately 50-60 pages of documentation from the 2008 Aberdeen Municipal Election that shows were several people voted both absentee and at the polls, along with a list of empty lots that voted, people that do not live in Aberdeen that voted and on and on.

I would love to show this documentation sometime — come by my office.

In Aberdeen it's not so much about Dems. and Reps. as it is outright voter fraud.

This has always been a pet project among republicans: control of the polling place via intimidation. It is hard enough to get democrats to vote in the first place, to suggest that they would vote two time or more is insane.
