By Adam Gore/ICC Sports Information DepartmentFULTON – Coach Chad Case and the Itawamba Community College Lady Indian softball team will play host to the 2010 ICC Spring Break Softball Tournament March 15 and 16 at the newly-renovated ICC softball field. “This event is a good opportunity for the local schools to see our facilities and great campus. It also gives me and area fans a chance to see a lot of the outstanding talent we have in this area,” said Case, who has led his program to back to back appearances in the post-season in his first two years at the helm of the program. ICC has recently added 43 chair-back seats directly behind home plate bringing capacity seating to nearly 150. Cost of the two-day event will be $3 per day. Every year, no matter the sport, a few guys that should be given fair looks by college coaches don’t get those looks.
Now, it’s not always the coaches not looking. There are only so many players they’re allowed to sign.
Unfortunately, there are a million reasons athletes fall through the cracks each year.
This handful is by no means the only ones in Monroe County, and please feel free to add to the list via comment below, but it’s a good start. So pay attention Blue Mountain and various colleges, here’s you a list of bball players to take a hard look at.
Smithville’s Kyle Stevens: Never the biggest or strongest guy on the court, but always has a block or two and crashes the boards as hard as anyone. That to go along with a consistent 15-20 points per game. My opinion: as true a PG as a PG gets.
Hamilton’s Martin Keaton: Talk about a guy with heart. Add his abiltiy to penetrate and shoot the rock, he’s an asset.
This got cut off for some reason, but here are a few more names to ponder for the next level.
Speaking of Anthony McDonald, no doubt this guy is a college player. You’d be challenged to find a better 3-point shooter and he can handle the ball.
Girl-wise, how about Keonna Ford? She’s shown she can take over a game for Amory. Sister Breonna has shown flashes of that too. I may take a shot on both of them.
In Nettleton, I think PG Brandon Jamison will get his chance, but Blake Birks deserves a shot too. The guy is a scorer and sharpshooter who doesn’t shy from the big shot, can hit big free throws and is as passionate about the game as anyone.
Justin Walden may be the most overlooked of the bunch. The Hatley rebounder has the height to do the same at the next level. Throw in his inside presence and Walden would be a great fit in the right situation. Blue Mountain should be knocking the guy’s door down.
Back in Aberdeen, Dayana McGee and Michelle Stewart are as clutch with the ball as anyone, and both are good rebounders.
There are a few, and there are more for sure.
